We reveal how carbon-fixing microbes adapt at the strain level under environmental stress—uncovering sweeping haplotypes, metabolic niche specialization, and key competitive genes (mer, mcrB) in Methanothermobacter spp. These insights pave the way for targeted microbiome engineering to enhance CO₂-to-methane bioconversion.
