Four Years of Knowledge Exchange: 19 Living Labs Successfully Completed within LIFE CO₂toCH₄

Between June 2022 and March 2026, the LIFE CO₂toCH₄ project successfully organized 19 Living Labs, creating a dynamic environment for knowledge exchange, technology demonstration and stakeholder engagement.

Throughout the project, a total of:

    • 10 Living Labs were organized at the ELGO-DIMITRA facilities,
    • 6 Living Labs took place at the Agios Dimitrios Power Plant in Ptolemaida, and
    • 3 Living Labs were hosted at the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park.

Each location served a distinct yet complementary purpose, highlighting different aspects of the project’s innovative biological methanation technology and its potential for large-scale implementation.

The ELGO-DIMITRA Living Labs focused on technical capacity building and public awareness, providing students, researchers and policymakers with a hands-on learning environment to deepen their understanding of biological methanation, renewable energy integration and carbon utilization technologies.

The Living Labs at the Agios Dimitrios Power Plant served as a high-level demonstration of industrial symbiosis, allowing energy sector professionals, industry representatives and stakeholders to evaluate the integration of the LIFE CO₂toCH₄ mobile unit within existing power generation infrastructure. These demonstrations showcased the technology’s potential to support decarbonization pathways for large-scale energy production.

The Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park Living Labs highlighted the transferability and replicability of the LIFE CO₂toCH₄ solution, demonstrating its ability to operate with different CO₂ emission sources and under different operating conditions. In parallel, the site welcomed the general public through dedicated Open Days, promoting awareness of innovative carbon capture and utilization technologies and their role in the transition towards climate neutrality.

The Living Labs engaged a broad and diverse audience, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the technology from multiple perspectives. Participants included students, researchers, academics, technical staff, industry professionals, energy experts, government officials, policymakers, stakeholders and citizens.

Beyond demonstrating the technical performance of the LIFE CO₂toCH₄ system, the Living Labs fostered dialogue, encouraged collaboration among different sectors and strengthened the connection between research, industry and society.

Together with the project’s Final Event at Forward Green Expo, the Living Labs represented the concluding outreach and dissemination activities of LIFE CO₂toCH₄. They marked the culmination of four years of engagement with the scientific community, industry, policymakers and the public, leaving behind a strong legacy of knowledge sharing, collaboration and innovation.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who participated in the LIFE CO₂toCH₄ Living Labs throughout the project. Your enthusiasm, valuable feedback and active engagement have been instrumental in disseminating knowledge, validating the project’s outcomes and supporting the wider adoption of innovative carbon utilization technologies.

Thank you for being part of the LIFE CO₂toCH₄ journey and for contributing to a more sustainable, circular and climate-neutral future.

Stay tuned for more After-LIFE activities!
